Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea is also known as Red Bush tea and is the caffeine free being produced from the leaves of rooibos plant, aspalathus Linearis not from Camelia Sinensis plant from which we get black tea, green tea and white tea.

Because it is caffeine free rooibos is a great alternative to most normal teas produced. Rooibos is not actually a tea but a herbal tisane although the red liquor it produces looks and taste much like a tea. It can be enjoyed at any time of the day hot or cold with or without milk.

Rooibos tea is a naturally sweet herbal tea grown in South Africa and is full of nutrients and antioxidants with a sweet, red liquor which taste much like tea but is caffeine free.

Rooibos (pronounced roy boss) comes from the Afrikaans for Red bush which is the colour of its processed leaf.

What is Rooibos Tea?

Rooibos Tea is a herbal tea produced from the leaf of the aspalathus linoaris plant. This is a different plant from which most tea come from the camellia sinensis plant which gives us the black and green teas which are so common.
The name Rooibos means "red bush" in Afrikaans and comes from the Red colour of the drink it produces.

The tea produced looks like a tea although as stated above has a red colour but can be drunk hot or cold with or without milk.

What are Rooibos Tea benefits?

The health benefits of Rooibos tea have been discussed for years.
Caffeine free and rich in vitamin C, mineral salts and proteins, Rooibos has even more antioxidants than green tea.

A lot of the benefits of drinking Rooibos tea as part of a healthy diet including weight loss are often anecdotal and not based on strong evidence but here is an interesting article regarding work done by scientists on the effect of Rooibos on anti-ageing. ROOIBOS AS EFFECTIVE ANTI-AGEING REMEDY
As an alternative to black tea Rooibos is low in tannins and naturally caffeine free makes it a good drink to have before bed time.

How is Rooibos produced?

Rooibos is harvested in the summer and is then bruised while the leaf is still green It is left in mounds to ferment and then spread out to dry in the sunlight. This turns the leaf red by the process of oxidation. After this the final stage is to sterilise the herbal tea with steam, sift the leaves and dry.
